Men's Fashion in Focus
Fashions wear for women is believed to develop at a much quicker pace compared to men's fashion. While this can be true in some sense, this does not totally mean that fashion for the men have not progressed over the years. In reality, fashion for both men and women have evolved significantly over the decades. So much so that we now see a new wave of clothing lines and designs specifically addressing people of particular generations.
The trend in the 1920s, for example, was all centered on collared shirts and tweed blazers. Such type of clothing appeared to be the perfect fashions wear for men around that time. Back then, t-shirts were deemed inappropriate as main clothing. They were classified as underwear which men had to put on when dressing up for special events particularly requiring mens formal wear. It was around that time too when men were appreciated for their impeccable evening ensembles that usually consist of mens coat and top hats.
Men's fashion sense eventually spiraled downward in the 1930s as a result of the economic downturn. Around that time, plaid patterns became popular. Various clothing materials were also introduced and used instead of the rather lavish fabrics. Such was the scenario of men's fashion up to the 1940s - colored, button down shirts and graphic print ties.
The 1950s was a time when men were wearing casual, narrow trousers and short-sleeved shirts. "Streetwear" became popular in this decade and denim jeans, which were normally used for manual clothing, became a craze. The following decade introduced more colors and styles in men's fashion. Tighter fitting styles, more feminine colors and floral prints became part of the men's fashions wear. It was also in the 1960s when velvet became more common and was utilized as fabric materials for various clothes like jackets and trousers. Men's shoes were also modified in order to be more eye-catching. Such fashion trend in men continued throughout the 1970s. That year, of course, was a time when bell bottom trousers were created and instantly became so popular such that these were in fact used as both casual and formal wear.
Couture fashion for men eventually emerged in the 1980s. Mens formal wear from well-known designers successfully moved into the mainstream fashion industry and were easily accepted by many. Leather, studs and embellishments usually found in women's fashions were then incorporated in most menswear and clothes in pastel colors and bright prints were such a hit.
The 1990s revealed a mixture of clothing styles including band t-shirts, jeans and leather boots which were also called then as hi-tops. The later part of this decade, though, seemed to suggest a revival of fashion in the 1960s and 70s.
Men's fashion at present is a hodge-podge of various fashion styles. Younger men and boys can choose from a variety of clothes heavily influenced by the hip hop culture while older men can select from a myriad of clothing styles that would give them classic, tailored looks.
